Begusarai town is the administrative headquarters of Begusarai district, which is one of the thirty-eight districts of Bihar state, India. Its total area is 1918 sq Kilometers. According to census 2011, its total population is 2970541 and its literacy rate is 59.13%. The district lies on the northern bank of river Ganga. It is located at Latitudes 25.15N & 25.45N and longitudes 85.45E & 86.36E. Places of visit includes Jai Mangla Temple, Nauo Lakha Temple, Kabar Lake.

History of Begusarai

Begusarai town is the administrative headquarters of Begusarai district, which is one of the thirty-eight districts of Bihar state, India. The district lies on the northern bank of river Ganga. It is located at Latitudes 25.15N & 25.45N and longitudes 85.45E & 86.36E. It was established in 1870 as a subdivision of Munger District. In 1972 it was established as a district. The name of the district apparently comes from “Begum” (queen) + “Sarai” (inn) as “Begum” of Bhagalpur used to come to the “Simaria Ghat” (a holy place at Ganges bank) for a month of pilgrimage which later took the present slang form Begusarai

It is the birthplace of famous Hindi poet Rashtrakavi Ramdhari Singh Dinkar.( However most people know Munger as his birthplace as Begusarai was the part of Munger during his birth and much of his lifetime.)and Eminent Historian Professor Ram Saran Sharma. Begusarai is the part of historic Mithila region. Eminent Historian Professor Ram Sharan Sharma was born on 26 November 1919 in Barauni, Begusarai, Bihar .Shri Rajendra Prasd singh (who got the best farmer & social worker award by UNICEF & Indira Gandhi) was born in village harrakh (Begusarai). Collectrate

The Collectorate play a pivotal role in the District administration. Collector in the Cadre of I.A.S heads the District. He acts as the District Magistrate for maintaining Law and Order in his jurisdiction. He deals mainly with planning and development, law and order, scheduled areas/agency areas, general elections, arms licensing etc.The Additional Collector who belongs to the B.A.S Cadre runs the Revenue administration under various enactments in the District. He is also designated as Additional District Magistrate. He mainly deals with civil supplies, land matters, mines and minerals, village officers etc.

The District Devlopment Commisioner who belongs to the B.A.S Cadre look after various developmental activities pertaining to various departments.The Major departments looked after by them are District Medical and Health Department, Social Welfare Department, BC Welfare, BC Corporation, Disable Welfare, Housing and Other Departments.The Additional Collector(Disaster) who belongs to the B.A.S Cadre look after various developmental activities pertaining to various departments.The Major departments looked after by them are Disaster section and Other Departments.

Economy

The main stream of the economy of Begusarai is agriculture. Major part of the population in this district do farming related activities. Kharif, Paddy, Urad, Arahar, Masur, Rabi, Wheat, Macca, Gram, Matar, Tisi, Mustard, Sunflower are major crops of the district. Apart from that oilseeds, tobacco, jute, potato, tomato, andi and red chilies are main cash crops of the district. Begusarai has recently developed fruit farming including guava, mango, and litchi. Besides, a number of ancillary industries are also present in the district. At present, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL),  Barauni Thermal Power Station (BTPS) and  Barauni Sudha Dairy are main industries in Begusarai.
